Welcome to the European Portal for Action on Health Equity

This Portal is a tool to promote health equity amongst different socio-economic groups in the European Union. Here, you can find information on policies and interventions to promote health equity within and between the countries of Europe, via the socio-economic determinants of health.

The information presented is the result of the collaboration of a wide range of health and social actors in the EU, that have come together in two pan-European initiatives that aims to stimulate action for greater health equity. The first of these was ‘Closing the Gap: Strategies for Action to Tackle Health Inequalities in the EU’ (2004-2007).

The second initiative, DETERMINE (2007-2010), which builds  ‘Closing the Gap’, establishes an EU Consortium for Action on the Socio-economic Determinants of Health (SDH), which aims to take forward the work of the WHO Commission on the SDH in an EU context.

The portal is a host to:

  • Country Profiles listing the main policies, actors and tools developed to address health inequalities on a national level.
  • Database of Good Practices and Innovative Approaches to reducing health inequalities.
  • EU Policy Section with Case Studies to illustrate how EU Policies and Programmes can affect health equity at the national level.
  • Health in all Policies Section with examples of how other policy areas can contribute to greater health equity, and mechanisms to achieve this.
  • Relevant links related to the issue of health inequalities and the socio-economic determinants of health inequality.

We welcome you to look through the various sections of the Portal, to learn about what EU Member States are doing to promote health equity, and to take action!
