Innovative Approaches

One of DETERMINE’s objectives is to identify innovative approaches to change health-related behaviours among socio-economically vulnerable groups. A review was undertaken of the published and 'grey' literature on innovative approaches across the EU. The aim of this review was to help to define what is meant by 'innovative' approaches, identify where they are operating and some common characteristics.

Click here to view all good practices that were submitted by work-package participants in the context of this review.

Based on a set of pre-defined criteria, work package participants selected 3 pilots, which apply innovative approaches to address the socio-economic determinants of health:

These projects were already in operation and the funds that they have been given was used to adapt particular elements to better address socio-economic determinants of health. The projects have run for a year (Oct 2008-Oct 2009) and are now being evaluated to look at where and how approaches have been successful and to identify areas where learning can be transferred across a wider EU level.

For more information about the pilots read the summary of the selection process and the selected pilot projects.

Background documents

See DETERMINE Working Document 2: A RAPID REVIEW OF INNOVATION IN THE CONTEXT OF SOCIAL DETERMINANTS. LESSONS FROM EUROPE. This report provides an overview of ‘innovative’ approaches to changing health-relevant behaviour among socio-economically vulnerable groups, based on a rapid review and innovative case studies. The report also looks in depth at the potential of social marketing and public/ private partnerships as ‘innovative’ ways of changing health-relevant behaviour.

See Case Study Review Questionnaire , which was used to assess ‘innovative’ approaches to changing health related behaviour.

See NSMC Call for Pilots (partners). This document gives a background to the call for pilots. It also describes the selection process and criteria that proposals have been be judged on.

See NSMC Call for Pilots (pilots). This document was aimed at potential pilot projects. It outlines the selection criteria and also the tender questionnaire that they have been requested to fill in. The document details what is expected from pilot projects and the selection process that will be undertaken.

As part of work on Innovative Approaches, DETERMINE explored the issues of Social Social Marketing and Public-Private Partnerships.
