Cross government

Health inequalities have been on the political agenda for a long time. The first official document referring to the problem goes back as far as 1989. Since then it has been increasingly debated, with the climax in the second half of the 1990s where public events were organized and there was high media coverage of the subject. The current public health programme (2002-2010) has a truly universal approach and it is often described by the catch phrase, “from cradle to grave”.

On January 1 2007, a structural reform was carried out in Denmark. Regions are now responsible for not only health services that concern treatment but also for patient-oriented prevention, whereas the municipalities are responsible for the citizen-oriented prevention and health promotion. Interestingly, the Danish government also looks at the issue of health inequalities from a longitudinal perspective within the framework of the “Inequalities in Intergenerational Mobility” project.
