With its long lasting emphasis on equality and a history of universal and free high quality welfare provision, Denmark is characterised as a Nordic welfare state. Therefore there is no separate document focusing solely on reduction of health inequalities as all the policies have a strong equity dimension. The value of the Gini coefficient is 0.247, where 0 = perfect equality and 1= perfect inequality, therefore making it the most egalitarian society in the world (Human Development Report, 2004).
