National Level Policies

The National Level Policies section of the portal provides an overview of
the actual situation concerning actions to tackle health inequalities in the
different European countries.

This part of the portal is currently being developed, the information for the remaining countries will continuously be completed.

In addition to the national level portraits of the individual countries the
overview analysis has been conducted and its initial results have been
published in EuroHealth magazine (EuroHealth, 11:2 p.24).

This publication contains summaries of what each of the 21 ´Closing the Gap´ partners are doing to address health inequalities in their countries, as well as the conclusions and recommendations of this 3-year initiative.

National Level Policies

The information contained in this section was first gathered as part of the Closing the Gap project. Please click here for an overview of the information that was collected under this project.

DETERMINE builds on Closing the Gap, but adds a Social Determinants of Health (SDH) focus, since health inequalities and the health gradient cannot be addressed by the health sector alone.

Each country’s national policy section therefore includes information on:

Policies, strategies and other documents that participants have identified within their countries which address or contribute to efforts to reduce health inequalities.
Tools and resources that participants have identified that are important to addressing health inequalities in their countries. These include specific human and financial resources, monitoring reports, impact assessments, etc.
Key Actors e.g. ministries, state agencies, universities and/or independent institutes that have an impact on health inequalities.
National database of good practice in those countries where these exist.

You may find that the subheadings with information in some National Policy Level sections differs slightly from that of others and that the content for some countries is more elaborate than that of others. This is because not all DETERMINE participants took part in the Health in All Policy work strand and did not, therefore, provide supplementary information on e.g. approaches initiated by other policy sectors to address the social determinants of health inequalities, or specific tools and mechanisms. Some of the countries that did not participate in the Health in All Policy work strand have updated and elaborated the information in their National Policy Sections on their own initiative.
